Caring for Students During Mergers and Closures

Transformational Partnerships Fund Webcast

Students can suffer unnecessary harm without caring and support during a closure or a merger. But what do they need and how can student-centric leaders put the necessary support in place? In this webcast, presented on April 10/2025 with the financial support of the Transformational Partnerships Fund, four presidents who have led their colleges through a merger or closure discuss the tangible steps they took to support and care for their students during the process. Moderated by Doug Lederman, co-founder and former editor of Inside Higher Ed, the panelists are: Ben Schears, president of Fort Hays Tech | Northwest; Nancy H. Blattner, president of Fontbonne University; Paula Langteau, principal consultant at Academic Game Changers and former president of Presentation College; and Reyes M. Gonzalez, emeritus president of St. Augustine College.  They are joined by Jamienne S. Studley, past president (2018-2025) of WASC Senior College and University Commission (and now senior advisor) who offers her perspective on best practices. Here is a link to a recording of the webcast which includes slides and Q&A.
